It pays to be an MLA in Delhi.
Members of Delhi’s legislative assembly have something to rejoice about as the state government has cleared a bill recommending a 300 per cent hike in their basic salary.
After the pay hike, the Delhi MLAs will get Rs 2,10,000 a month in salary and allowances. This makes them the highest-paid legislators in the country.
In fact, this is also higher than what parliamentarians get -- Rs 1,40,000 a month.
Over the next three years, the Delhi MLAs are estimated to get more than Rs 1.5 crore in salary and benefits, including travel allowance and a one-time allowance for office.
The 70 legislators, 67 of whom belong to the Aam Aadmi Party, will earn a tad less than Delhi’s per capita income of about Rs 2,41,000 lakh in 2014-15.
The bill will need clearance from the Centre.
