UK-based medical technology company Smith & Nephew plc has entered into an agreement to acquire Pune-based Adler Mediequip Pvt Ltd as well as the brands and assets of Sushrut Surgicals Pvt Ltd which manufactures orthopaedic trauma products.

The acquisition will serve as an entry point for Smith & Nephew to India’s growing trauma product segment.

“Sushrut-Adler’s trauma portfolio strongly complements our established positions in orthopaedic reconstruction and sports medicine in India, giving us an enhanced platform from which we can continue to build a sustainable business,” Olivier Bohuon, CEO of Smith & Nephew said.

Adler is owned by the Pitre family and its senior management team will continue with the business. It was set up in 1992 with capabilities for high precision machining, CAD/CAM enabled operations, forging of stainless steel implants, high end finishing lines and final packaging operations. Sushrut was started by Vimal Pitre in 1973.

As part of the arrangement, Adler’s 116 employees and Sushrut’s 50 employees, including a sales team which directly support the Adler business, will come under the UK-based company. Sushrut-Adler’s products include trauma implants and instrumentation, as well as spine and limb salvage portfolios.
