BSE-listed music label Saregama India has appointed Vikram Mehra as its managing director, as per a public disclosure by the company. Mehra will join Saregama by the end of October 2014, and fills the void left by the departure of former MD Surya Mantha, who quit earlier this year to join Peepul Capital Advisors.
Prior to joining Saregama, Mehra was chief commercial officer (CCO) at Tata Sky for over 10 years where he was responsible for subscription revenue management, churn management, brand marketing, new product development and customer analytics, etc. Prior to joining Tata Sky, he was with News Corp owned STAR TV as vice president. He had also earlier worked at the Tata group.
Saregama generates revenues from its core business of music, besides its film and television division. But music remains its mainstay in terms of bottom-line while the film and TV serial business is into losses. The music business mostly generates its revenues through licences.
The company has been enhancing its digital presence as well. It had earlier launched an internet radio service on its portal in multiple languages covering Malayalam, Punjabi, Marathi, Carnatic, Hindustani classical, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi classics.
In July 2012, the firm picked up 10 per cent stake in Timbre Media, a company floated by former WorldSpace radio employees. The move was aimed at reviving WorldSpaceâs legacy in India besides launching a few other mobile radio properties.
