Bangalore-based biotechnology company Biocon Ltd has elevated Arun Suresh Chandavarkar as chief executive officer (CEO) and joint managing director (MD) of the company, as per a stock market disclosure.
The board of directors at its meeting held on Thursday also approved the induction of Chandavarkar on the board of Biocon, the company said in the disclosure.
Chandavarkar who joined Biocon in 1990 as general manager - operations and subsequently took on the role of president - operations & technology, has been working as the chief operating officer since 2006.
Under his leadership, Biocon has established expertise in diverse technology platforms spanning microbial fermentation, cell culture, chemical synthesis and purification to develop a wide range of products from specialty enzymes to active pharmaceutical ingredients to recombinant therapeutic proteins.
"Arun has been a core member of the leadership team at Biocon and has worked very closely with me over the last 24 years. He has played a pivotal role in the evolution of Biocon and I am confident that, in his new role, he will build immense value for Biocon and its stakeholders," said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD, Biocon.
Chandavarkar said," These are exciting times and I look forward to steering the company to the next level."
His current responsibilities cover all aspects of Biocon's business with a specific emphasis on strategic management.
Chandavarkar holds a B Tech degree from IIT, Bombay and earned his Ph D in Biochemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, the US.
Established in 1978, Biocon is India's largest and one of the top Asian biotechnology companies with a strategic focus on biopharmaceuticals and research services.
Early this year, Biocon's marketing head Rakesh Bamzai resigned from the company.
