Ami Parikh, head of transaction support group at law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, is set to join Zia Mody-led law firm AZB & Partners to start the same practice in its Mumbai office.
Parikh, an alumnus of Government Law Collage (Mumbai) from the 2000 batch, started her career with Hariani & Co as an associate. She worked at DSK Legal and Malvi Ranchoddas & Co, before moving to undivided Amarchand Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co in 2006.
She later became partner and head of transaction support group at Amarchand Mangaldas. When the firm split into two in 2015, Parikh moved to Cyril Amarchand.
Parikh confirmed that she was joining AZB but refused to divulge any details. Mody said her appointment will bring about greater discipline to AZBâs transaction support work.
Legal news website Bar & Bench was the first to report the appointment.
Transaction support is a relatively new practice area for Indian law firms. Amarchand Mangaldas had started the transaction support practice in 2013.
A person familiar with the development said that in mature markets, especially in the UK, law firms target high-volume work including due diligence of corporate transactions, litigation and real estate deals for companies under the service group. As Indian companies are becoming more process-driven, many domestic law firms are looking to start the practice.
AZB, which traditionally focused on M&A deals, private equity and corporate practice, has expanded in many new areas of late. In October, it recruited Deepak Chopra, who was counsel to the revenue department before joining law firm PDS Legal, as part of its tax litigation practice in New Delhi.
In 2015, the firm had started a vertical for fraud investigation and dispute service after hiring Ajay Upadhyay, who was director of fraud investigation and dispute services at EY, formerly Ernst & Young.
